I revisited my Evernote archives and found this little piece of writing from December 2009. It seems appropriate now with all the "Shit XYZ people say" videos going around.
Having lived in Canada basically my entire life, except birth and two years when I didn't have hair on my head, I am pretty good at analysing "white" people. Whether you're a "white washed" immigrant, to an actual white francophone or anglophone, I'm pretty damn good at figuring out your mind and how you'll react to things. Let's analyse: below are some words that you'll say in front of a white person and what their reaction will be (read: immediate thought).
Comment/Question: "I'm going to a wedding" Answer: "Sweet! Open bar!"
Comment/Question: "We're going out dancing." Answer: "Oh you'll totally meet hot boys!"
Comment/Question: "Are you going to the work Christmas party?" Answer: "Hell ya, free booze? C'mon!"
Comment/Question: "I had some Arab food today." Answer: "Oh I love Lebanese food."
Comment/Question: "I'm Palestinian." Answer: "So you're like from Israel?"
Comment/Question: "I had a really bad day." Answer: "A bottle of vodka will cheer you up."
Comment/Question: "I don't really watch television." Answer: "OMG, my life would cease to exist without Gossip Girl!"
Comment/Question: "We don't drink at our weddings." Answer: "Is that legal?"
Answer: "You're Muslim? Why aren't you wearing that thingy...you know...on your head?"
Comment/Question: "We're going out for dinner for Sara's birthday on Friday, are you in?" Answer: "Oh I'd love to but I'm so broke!"
One week later:"Hey!" "Hey did I tell you I'm going on a Euro trip this summer?" "I thought you were broke?" "Yeah, yeah, I'll save up."
